Word of the Day: Youth Forum

Today, we highlight Hamvention 2019 (May 17-19) in our Word of the Day column. For the 32nd straight year, Carole Perry, WB2MPG, will moderate the event’s Youth Forum, featuring young operators speaking on a variety of topics. Perry, a 2018 inductee into the  CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame, recently visited DX Engineering to talk about her longstanding commitment to teaching young people about Ham Radio and the importance of reaching children who may not otherwise be exposed to the hobby. Perry, a retired middle school science teacher, taught a mandatory Ham Radio class to students in Staten Island, NY, introducing tens of thousands of kids to Amateur Radio over three decades.

“I tied the Ham Radio class into the students’ curriculum,” she said. “If they studied the Old West, we’d talk about the telegraph and its relation to Ham radio. If they were studying a particular country, we would contact people there.”

Perry, director of the Radio Club of America and recipient of the first Carole Perry Educator of the Year Award,  left DX Engineering with these parting words to the Ham Radio community:

“Why don’t you become a role model? Get these kids excited about what they can do with Ham Radio.”
