Word of the Day (Rig): What is a Rig in Amateur Radio?

Rig refers to a transmitter, receiver or, most commonly, a transceiver—a combination of a receiver and transmitter in one (back in the old days, these were separate pieces of equipment). Your transceiver enables you to transmit and receive signals, either across town or halfway around the world. You can choose from handheld, mobile, or base station rigs depending on what you’d like to get out of the hobby—and what your budget allows. DX Engineering carries handheld (or HT), mobile, and more powerful base station rigs from leading brands, including ICOM, Kenwood, Yaesu, and Alinco.
