Product Spotlight: ICOM’s IC-V80-Sport VHF FM Transceiver Makes a Triumphant Return

It’s back!

Icom announced that it is once again offering the ICOM IC-V80 SPORT VHF FM Transceiver—the company’s most economical, full-featured, 2 meter handheld. For budget-minded hams who want an HT that boasts reliability and performance from one of the most trusted names in amateur radio, this is your rig! Looking for a reliable backup for your go-to HT? You can’t go wrong with the IC-V80 Sport, which was discontinued in 2018.

The Sport model features a handy BP-263 Battery Case for AA cells instead of a rechargeable battery pack and charger (hence, it’s lower price point). Even with alkaline batteries, these handhelds give you a full 5.5 watts of RF power in a small, lightweight package.

Features include:

  • Internal VOX function for hands-free operation when used with an optional headset and plug-adapter cable. The HT employs a special sound amplifier that doubles the audio output to 750 mW. Its large speaker delivers loud and intelligible audio.
  • 207 alphanumeric memory channels that let you pick and choose your desired scanning
  • CTCSS and DTCS tone codes provide quiet standby and allow you to use tone-access repeaters
  • Dust- and water-resistance equivalent to IP54 for reliable outdoor use
  • Program, memory, skip, priority, and tone scans
  • Power save function
  • Repeater lockout and busy channel lockout
  • PC programmable with optional CS-V80 software
  • Direct keypad frequency entry
  • DTMF autodial memories
  • Auto power off
  • LCD backlight
  • Wide/narrow channel spacing

The affordable and functional IC-V80 Sport comes with AA battery case, BNC antenna, and belt clip.
