New Product Spotlight: Yaesu FT-710 AESS HF/50 MHz Base/Portable Transceiver

October has pleasantly turned into “new transceiver” month at OnAllBands!  And there’s nothing that gets us more excited than talking about the features and capabilities of a freshly minted SDR rig, especially when it comes from a leading manufacturer like Yaesu.

Available from DX Engineering, the new Yaesu FT-710 AESS HF/50 MHz Transceiver with SP-40 Speaker, has a compact design that makes it perfect for portable ops as well as base station service. Before we get into the nuts and bolts of the 160 through 6 meter FT-710, what exactly does AESS mean? In a hobby teeming with acronyms, that’s a new one.

AESS stands for Acoustic Enhancement Speaker System—a welcome addition for a transceiver of this size (9.4″ W x 3.1″ H x 9.7″ D). Generally, compact rigs have little to crow about regarding their audio capabilities. The AESS system produces high-fidelity audio that is generated by digital processing. The mid-low frequency enhancement speaker and the side speaker combine to create dramatic high-fidelity audio output. The result is an expansive and clear receive audio from a rig weighing just under ten pounds.

Other features include:
