In May, a crack team from Airwaves GPS installed three transceivers in the Summit Racing/DX Engineering Roamin’ Gladiator Jeep project vehicle:
- Yaesu FT-891 HF/50 MHz All Mode Mobile Transceiver (YSU-FT-891) for long-distance contacts
- Icom ID-5100A-D VHF/UHF Digital Transceiver (ICO-ID-5100A-D) for local communication
- Rugged Radios Jeep Two-Way GMRS Mobile Radio Kit (RRD-JP1-GMR25, waterproof version, below) for communication with GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) and FRS (Family Radio Service) radios

While most of our readers were well familiar with the capabilities of the Icom and Yaesu rigs, the GMRS/FRS setup prompted questions from those not as acquainted with these valuable communication services.

Summit Racing, DX Engineering’s parent company, reached out to Dan, WB7OXP, DX Engineering customer/technical support specialist and veteran off-roader, for the 411 on a range of topics, including GMRS and FRS.

Listen to the podcast with Dan, WB7OXP, here:
It covers the evolution of GMRS, advice for GMRS users, GMRS licensing requirements (no ham radio test required), repeaters, and more. If you’d rather read snippets of the interview pertaining to GMRS/FRS and mobile radio, read them here at Summit Racing’s excellent blog about all things automotive, OnAllCylinders.
