An Important Reminder to All Hams: Please Be Safe Out There During POTA Activations (Video)

One of the stark realities of being an amateur radio operator is that our beloved hobby can be dangerous. While we’re enjoying our time at our home stations and portable setups, it’s important to always take every precaution possible to reduce the risk of potential injury or death.

Accidents happen, so be vigilant about your equipment and keenly aware of your surroundings when setting up, operating, or tearing down. Whether you’re a new or experienced operator, you simply can’t be too careful.

We were all recently reminded of these dangers with the tragic news regarding avid North Carolina contester and Parks On the Air® operator Ambrose “Tripp” Owens III, N4NTO (SK). N4NTO passed away during a POTA activation in Harnett County on July 4, 2025. As reported by the ARRL, investigators from the Harnett County Sheriff’s office believe the cause of death was accidental electrocution, but a final determination has not been made. He was working with an antenna mast in the Chicora Civil War Cemetery. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, his many friends in the ham radio community, and all those who had the privilege of putting N4NTO in their logbooks.

To honor his memory and remind everyone about staying safe during POTA and other outdoor operating activities, DX Engineering CEO Tim, K3LR, reached out to POTA enthusiasts from the DXE team, Troy, AC8OW, and Michael, KI8R, for their outdoor operating safety tips.

A few key takeaways:

  • Before you pick your activation spot and deploy your antennas, take the time to assess the entire park, making note of power lines that might be hidden by trees as you drive around.
  • Slow down, take a minute, take a breath, and look around you.
  • Be twice as far away as you think you need to be from power lines so if the mast tips over, it won’t come in contact.
  • Don’t forget to be careful with lengthy antennas mounted on your vehicle as well.

We strongly encourage you to watch the video below and pass on the information to everyone you know. We want to hear you on the air for years to come.
