Palau Islands QRV in January
Get the new DXing year off to a rousing start by putting Palau (T8) in your log book. Kazuyoshi, JH6WDG’s DXpedition to the Republic of Palau—an island country in the western Pacific Ocean—is scheduled for January 7-13. You can try to make a QSO with JH6WDG, active as T88AQ, on 160 through 10 meters in CW, SSB and FT8 modes. He will be operating from Koror Island (IOTA OC-009), Palau’s commercial center which contains about 70% of its population (14,000 out of 18,000). For JH6WDG, this will be a return trip to Palau, which ranked (as of December) as the 147th Most Wanted DXCC Entity in North America, according to ClubLog.
Reality show buffs will remember that the tenth season of Survivor was filmed in Koror—one of about 340 islands which make up the republic. Palau is also home to the world’s first shark sanctuary. Shark fishing in Palau waters is forbidden in a specifically designated zone about the size of France.
